This in-depth study addresses a number of issues surrounding the controversial topic of tongues. It examines both the origin of tongues in Scripture and what is called tongues today. We establish the place of Scripture over experience. We look at the possiblity of tongues in the Old Testament, ecstactic utterances among the pagan religions and today, the place of the New Covenant, the transitional nature of the book of Acts, the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and its relation to tongues. We examine every passage regarding tongues. Finally we draw some conclusions from the biblical evidence regarding the modern “speaking in tongues” movement and whether this is genuine tongues from God or not.
